Words of Wisdom From Grandpa

4:02 PM

Hi there!

A wise man once told asked me, "Someone is going to do it, so why not you?" and it changed my life.

I'm headed off to college in 11 days, and it's been putting a lot of things into perspective for me. Above all, how big my dreams are and how hard they can be to achieve.

In high school I was at the top of my class, and I do know I'm pretty smart. However, at the beginning of the summer I had started to realize that there are people much, much smarter than I am, those who have strong talents of many kinds. This is inevitable in our world.

So, my dreams of becoming a best-selling author, of changing children's lives in certain ways, began to seem too far out of reach for the caliber of person that I am. I started thinking that there were others who were better at writing, at being with children, and they would get there before me; they were going to follow my dreams and I would be watching in the dust of their success and happiness.

I never said this to my grandpa, but I think he could see it in me. I was losing hope at becoming who I had wanted to be. That wasn't the go-getter girl he'd known forever, and so he reached out to me with those words: someone is going to do it, so why not you?

I haven't felt the disappointment I was feeling at the beginning of the summer since. Whenever a thought comes to my mind telling myself that I'm not a good writer, or I'll never be able to change someone's world, I stop and say to myself someone is going to do it, so why not me?

It's the truest thing I've ever been told and told myself. I want to encourage everyone out there to do what they have always dreamed, go after it, and don't lose sight of it, because one day it will be done and why shouldn't it be you? If you go after it with everything you have, it very well could be. It's going to be hard work though, don't kid yourself there.

Be an artist, be an author, play college baseball, find a cure, go to medical school, start your own business, make YouTube videos, create, create, and create, because someone is going to do why not you? If you want to, all you have to do is go after it.

Never doubt yourself,

I'm a Camp Nanowrimo Winner!

7:33 PM

Hey everyone!

This post is about what Brooke actually wrote, and what Brooke is really writing.

Sorry for talking in third person I'm just excited about my URL.

This July I was able to participate in Camp Nanowrimo. Nanowrimo is an organization that tries to get you to write 50,000 words, smack dab in the middle of your insane, busy life. It usually takes place in November, but for years they've been doing a summer program during April and July called Camp Nanowrimo. You can go for the usual 50,000 word goal or you can create your own personal goal.

Since I'm a student and November is usually a busy time for me, I decided to do Camp Nanowrimo this summer during the last July! I set my goal at the usual 50,000 words and I was able to pump out 55, 976 words this July!

I'm so proud of myself for many reasons. Writing is one of my greatest passions, and I feel like I've succeeded in some aspect of it. I wrote a short 30,000 word novella, and now I'm partway through (25,000 words into) what seems to be a huge piece, and will end up around 80,000 words.

I'm so excited.

This wasn't the post I'd had planned for the next one, but I realized I could share these badges and I wanted to share my accomplishment.

There are a lot of published Nanowrimo writers - two that I'm a huge fan of are Rainbow Rowell and Stephanie Perkins. Just the thought that I could someday be as good of a writer as them is amazing. I love thinking about it.

I'm sorry I just keep going on and on about this, I'm just still excited. It's great to share it with people!

Thanks for reading! Maybe someday you'll be reading a lot more from a published book, on the bestsellers shelf, in your local bookstore.

And so Brooke did write....

Life is SOOO b-e-a-utiful

"Living close to the ground
Is seventh heaven cause there are angels all around
Among my frivolous thoughts
I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts

The indications reveal
That few of us realize that life is quite surreal
So if you're dying to see
I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity"
~Angels, Owl City

The title of this post is a Bruce Almighty reference that I believe you understood...but maybe not, so just letting you know.

My summer is breezing by, and I've had a fantastic share of beautiful moments. I wanted to post them for you all!

This is a photo taken in Glen Arbor, Michigan where my grandparents live : ) They live in a tiny little vacation town year round, and it's always amazing to see them and explore the area that they live in. This was taken at Pierce Stocking Drive on the overlook. It's truly a beautiful sight to see, and an amazing feeling to see so many happy people running up and down!

Just me doing my favorite thing in the world at the same overlook...reading!

This is of my dog, Ellie. She's the sweetest thing in the world and all she wants to do is love you. I took her to the middle school that I went to, listening to Love is Easy by McFly at the same time. The lyrics made me feel incredible as I stood in the field of the place that, quite honestly, gave me some not so good memories.

Middle school was full of awkward times and mean girls, so hearing the line "...And I see places that I have been, in ways that I've never seen, my side of the grass is green. Oh I can't believe that it's so simple, it feels so natural to me. If this is love, love is easy, it's the easiest thing to do. If this is love, love completes me..." It was so refreshing to be with my happy, happy dog in a place that once hadn't been so great to me. I saw it from completely different eyes. It's so easy to love Ellie; she is a blessing in my life and I'm so glad she opened my eyes.

The picture of the flower is from my grandpa's garden. Gardening is one of his favorite hobbies, among tennis, golf, and painting. Every year beautiful flowers come up in his front and back lawn, and they're too amazing not to photograph. There's so much life budding in his yard.

The next picture is of me at my mom's wedding! Yes, she got married! I'm so happy for her, and I love dressing up for any occasion. Becoming a blended family, with two brothers of my own and three new stepsisters, hasn't been easy. There's a lot of trial and error, but I'm happy with how far we've come and the service was amazing at recognizing the putting together of two families.

The final picture is one that my best friend, Alyssa, took of me at the Disney Store that opened recently in the mall by our house. Disney is one of those things that never gets old, and I'll never stop loving it *sings Frozen* It was great to be able to walk in, sit down at the coloring table, and pour some pretend tea with my best friend : ) Getting old never has to be a bad thing!

I'm happy I could share these amazing moments of my summer with you all. My next blog post will either be a college dorm haul or a little bit of inspiration that has been building inside of me for a while!

Stay tuned,

Brooke : )
